Malignant hyperthermia is a potentially fatal, inherited disorder usually associated with the administration of some general anesthetics and/or the drug succinylcholine. Most people who are MH-susceptible are unaware until they experience an MH crisis. According to MHAUS, the exact incidence of malignant hyperthermia is unknown – but anyone with a family history of MH is potentially at risk.

A MH crisis can occur during surgery, extreme heat or exercise. The hallmark symptoms are dangerously high body temperature, muscle rigidity, rapid heart rate and shallow breathing. Without prompt treatment, a MH crisis can be fatal.

Because MH is relatively rare, medical professionals can get support from MHAUS experts to diagnose and treat an MH crisis. The MH Hotline is staffed 24/7 and provides practitioners immediate access to real time advice in handling this fast-moving and complex disorder.

If you are MH-susceptible, a MedicAlert ID and membership are vital protections. In an emergency, if you can’t speak for yourself, MedicAlert will be your voice to avoid a potentially fatal MH crisis.
